Stavroula Hatzios, Assistant Professor of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology and of Chemistry in the Yale Microbial Sciences Institute, has been named a Microbiome, Neurobiology and Disease Fellow by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement (RCSA).

Hatzios is one of fifty promising early-career scientists to be named fellows for the new Scialog initiative.

The initiative will convene chemists, physicists, biologists, microbiologists, neuroscientists, and bioinformaticians to explore our understanding of the gut microbiome and its relationship to the brain in both normal and disease states. The program begins with its first conference this spring in Tucson, Arizona.

The Hatzios lab use chemical and biological tools to study enzymes and other proteins that shape host-microbe dynamics in gastrointestinal infections. By examining the functional proteome of bacterial infections, they aim to uncover biochemical pathways that will generate new leads for therapeutic targets, activity-based diagnostics, and drug-delivery systems.

Fellows are selected from multiple disciplines and institutions across the U.S. and Canada to maximize creative thinking and innovative ideas. At each conference, participants form multidisciplinary teams to design research projects, which they pitch to leading scientists who have facilitated discussions throughout the meeting.

The fellowships are co-sponsored by RCSA, the Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group and the Frederick Gardner Cottrell Foundation.
