Microbial Sciences Institute Welcomes New Faculty Members

New MSI Faculty
July 25, 2023

The Yale Microbial Sciences Institute is pleased to welcome two new faculty members.

Hualiang Pi, Ph.D. will open her lab as an assistant professor at MSI in partnership with the Department of Microbial Pathogenesis in September, 2023. Having completed her Ph.D. in Microbiology at Cornell University and postdoctoral training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Dr. Pi examines the molecular mechanisms that microbes such as Bacillus anthracis and Clostridioides difficile use to sense and adapt to changing environments. The Pi lab aims to reveal host and bacterial factors that contribute to infection and identify new targets for antimicrobial therapeutics. Martina Dal Bello, Ph.D. will start her lab in July, 2024. She comes to MSI as an assistant professor in partnership with the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, having earned her Ph.D. in Biology at Università di Pisa in Italy followed by postdoctoral research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Dal Bello investigates how bacteria respond to and modify their environment and in turn impact species interactions, assembly processes, and microbial communities. The Dal Bello lab integrates lab experiments and data from natural communities with ideas and tools from community ecology, microbial physiology, and systems biology to build an ecological toolbox for the manipulation of microbiomes.
